Over time with every day wear and tear our feet are susceptible to injuries and conditions that can have a debilitating effect.  In this article from http://ssov3.staywellsolutionsonline.com/RelatedItems/1,4007 and behalf of the American Podiatric Medical Association here are a few tips to take care of your feet!

  • It’s important to know your feet!  Keep your eyes out for and discoloration, color, or thickening of the nails, or peeling on the soles.
  • Don’t wear the same shoes every day, it’s important to give shoes time to dry out before wearing them again and for best results use an anti-fungal powder on a regular basis.
  • Prevent your risk of injury of infection.  Don’t go barefoot!  If you are plan to wear open faced shoes be sure to use sun block for protection.
  •  Avoid fungus infection or athlete’s foot by washing your feet regularly.  Pat your feet dry between the toes where moisture is likely to build.
  • Use shoe savvy!  If you play tennis, buy tennis shoes not walking shoes.  For proper fit, make sure your shoes are a half-inch longer than your longest toe.
  • Throw away worn out shoes.  Shoes lose form and support over time.
  • Be careful with over the counter pain remedies for foot problems such as corns or warts.  Most of these contain acids that could possibly be harmful, especially for people who suffer with vascular problems or diabetes.
  • Don’t ignore painful foot pain.  See your physician for an assessment of painful heels, bunions, hammertoes, or other serious foot conditions.  If its determined treatment is necessary, keep in mind it’s better to receive treatment early!  A simple foot condition can lead to knee, hip or lower back problems over time.

Many factors can lead to foot pain.  At Blue Ridge Orthopaedic and Spine Center, we treat foot injuries caused by work, sports-related injuries, fractures, deformities, disease, and every day wear and tear using a variety of surgical and non-surgical methods.  To speak with a foot and ankle specialist, please call 540.347.9220 or simply visit us @ www.broava.com for more information.
